“The Sword of the Spirit”
Today we are returning to our series on the armor of God from Ephesians 6. All the pieces of armor we have looked at have been defensive and needed for protection. The belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, sturdy sandals of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith and helmet of salvation were all needed to protect the soldier from attacks of the enemy. And they are all needed to protect us from the deceit, lies, and accusations of our spiritual enemy.    But the Roman soldier would have never gone into battle without an offensive weapon, particularly a small sword important in hand to hand combat.        This morning we will look at how we can use the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God to counter the attacks of the enemy who is trying to discourage and wound us emotionally and spiritually. There is power in the Word of God when spoken.

    “The Shield of Faith”
So far in our series on the armor of God from Ephesians ch. 6, we have looked at the importance and significance of the belt of truth, God’s word, the breastplate of God’s own righteousness that has been placed into our account, and the studded sandals of the gospel of peace that comes from being in a restored relationship with God.        This morning’s message is on the shield of faith. There were two shields used by Roman soldiers. The one Paul is referring to was quite large, fully protected the soldier as well as the other pieces of armor, and quenched the fiery arrows of the enemy.     How does our faith do the same in the spiritual realm? None of the other parts of the armor will function properly without faith; without a confident trust that what they represent is true.

“Feet Fitted with the Readiness of the Gospel of Peace”
In this series on the armor of God, we have seen that the first piece of armor needed is a knowledge of God’s truth, the Bible, and its authority. The 2nd piece of armor needed is the breastplate of righteousness. The moment a person receives Christ as one’s Lord and Savior God sees us as clothed in His very own righteousness and holiness. Living in that reality can protect us from the lies and deception of the enemy as well as the wounds of others.    Today we are looking at the sandals of a Roman soldier which represent standing firm and secure; prepared for the accusations, deceptions, and temptations hurled at us from the enemy by having a proper understanding of God’s gospel of peace. We will look at the difference between being at peace with God and having the peace of God.

    “The Breastplate of Righteousness”
Our summer series is on the armor of God from Ephesians 6:10-18. Last week we looked briefly at God’s belt of truth. Paul tells us that the first piece of armor we need is an understanding of God’s truth, the Bible, and its authority. It is where we understand who God is, who we are in Christ, and His will for our lives.    This morning we are looking at the 2nd piece of armor that Paul mentions; the breastplate of righteousness. The soldier’s breastplate was made to protect all the vital organs.    We will see that when a person receives Christ as one’s Lord and Savior, from that moment on God sees them as clothed in the garment of His very own righteousness and holiness. Living in the reality of that spiritual truth can protect us from the lies and deception of the enemy as well as the wounds of others.

    “The Belt of Truth”
Last week in our introduction to our summer series on the armor of God, we looked at the fact that if we are followers of Christ we have a spiritual enemy. One biblical name for Him is the devil. He is the thief who wants to steal our spiritual joy, kill our enthusiasm for loving and serving God and others and wreak havoc with our lives. But God hasn’t left us on our own to defend ourselves against him.    He has given us defensive armor, needed for our protection, as well as offensive weapons to confront our spiritual enemy. This morning we will share some general thoughts about God’s armor made available to us as well as address the importance of the belt of truth.    A Roman soldier’s belt was a core piece of armor that held some of the other pieces of armor in place. The Bible must be seen as authoritative in our lives if we are to overcome the enemy. We will look at some reasons why it is the Word of God.
